Who we are
SummarAI is a service of Florian Dejonckheere, Martelaarslaan 140, 9000 Gent, Enterprise number 1044.193.122, VAT BE1044.193.122, which is the controller of your personal data. You can reach us at app@summar-ai.app for any question about your data.
This policy explains which personal data we collect when you use SummarAI, why, on what legal basis, who we share it with, and what your rights are. We collect as little as we need to provide the service, and we never sell your data.
What we collect
- Account details: your name and email address, your password (stored as a secure hash) or the identifier of your Google account when you sign in with Google, your preferences, and when you agreed to the Terms of Service.
- Your books and what you do with them: the files you upload, the content generated from them, your reading progress, your notes, and your questions and chats.
- Payment details: your purchases, payments and invoices. Payments are handled by a payment provider: we never see or store your card details.
- Feedback: the feedback you send us, and whether you agree to be contacted about it.
- Usage statistics: the pages you visit, how long you stay, the website that referred you, and your country, browser, operating system and type of device. These statistics are anonymous: they are collected without cookies, cannot be linked to you or your account, and your IP address is only used to determine your country, without being stored.
- Technical data: the IP address and time of your last sign-ins, and the server logs and error reports (such as your IP address and browser) needed to run and secure the service.
Why we use it
- To provide the service (performance of our contract with you): to create and manage your account, process your books and show you the results, answer your questions, and process your payments.
- To comply with the law (legal obligation): to keep our accounting and tax records, such as invoices.
- To keep the service secure and working (our legitimate interest): to prevent abuse and fraud, to enforce our Terms of Service (for example when a book is uploaded without the right to use it, or contains illegal or inappropriate content), and to find and fix errors.
- To improve the service (our legitimate interest): to understand how SummarAI is used through anonymous usage statistics, to read your feedback, and to contact you about it if you agree to.
Your books and the content generated from them are private to your account: we never share them with other users, and never use them to train AI models. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing. The AI only processes your books to generate their content for you.
Who we share it with
We share your data only with the service providers we need to run SummarAI, which process it on our behalf and under our instructions:
- OpenAI, to process the text of your books and your questions with AI models. OpenAI only processes this content to generate a response, and does not store your books for us. Content sent through its API is not used to train its models.
- Stripe, to process payments.
- Google, when you choose to sign in with your Google account.
- AppSignal, to monitor errors and performance.
- An analytics service, in the European Union, to collect anonymous usage statistics.
- Our hosting provider, in the European Union, where your data is stored.
We may also disclose your data when the law requires us to, for example at the request of a court.
Transfers outside the EU
Your data is stored in the European Union, but some of our service providers process it outside the European Economic Area, in particular in the United States, such as OpenAI to generate the content of your books. We only allow this with the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the standard contractual clauses of the European Commission.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. When you delete a book, it is permanently deleted, with everything generated from it. We only keep a record of the use of our AI providers for it (the model, the number of tokens and the cost), without its content. When you delete your account from your account page, it is closed immediately, and your books are permanently deleted in the same way shortly after. To have the rest of your data erased for good, contact us at app@summar-ai.app, and we will do so within one month.
We keep invoices and payment records for as long as Belgian accounting and tax law requires, even after you delete your account.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access, correct and erase your personal data, to receive it in a portable format, to restrict its processing, and to object to its processing based on our legitimate interest. You can update your details and delete your account from your account page. For any other request, contact us at app@summar-ai.app. We answer within one month.
If you believe we do not handle your data correctly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (www.dataprotectionauthority.be), or with the data protection authority of the country you live in.
Minors
SummarAI is only intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use it, and we do not knowingly collect the data of minors. If we learn that an account belongs to a minor, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will let you know before they take effect. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
