How it works

From ePUB to reading companion in three steps

  1. 1. Upload an eBook

Add any DRM-free ePUB to your library, from the books you already own.

  2. 2. Let SummarAI analyze it

SummarAI reads the whole book and generates its summaries, chapter breakdown, characters and plot, or key ideas.

  3. 3. Explore as you read

Track your reading progress and explore only what you have read already, without any spoilers.

Everything you need to understand a book, and nothing past your bookmark

The story, the characters, the ideas and the answers, all following your bookmark, so you understand what you read without spoiling what comes next

No spoilers

Track your reading progress, and the characters, locations, plot events and answers to your questions stay hidden until you reach the chapter that reveals them.

Meet the cast

Get to know the characters of a novel with portraits and profiles, see how they relate to each other and where the story takes place, and follow the plot on a timeline you can search and filter.

Talk to the characters

Pro

Ideas you can use

Browse the key takeaways of a non-fiction book, check off its actionable insights, look up its concepts in a glossary, and find the other resources it recommends.

Ask your book

Pro

Ask about the contents of your book, or an explanation of a concept, and get answers based on the book. With links to the chapters they come from.

Notes that connect

Write rich notes on your books that reference chapters, characters and locations, and with Pro, let the assistant turn your chats into notes and export everything to Markdown for Obsidian, Notion or Logseq.

In your language

Read the summaries and everything else in your own language, or in the language of each book.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you want to know before you upload your first book

Does it work for novels and non-fiction?

Yes. SummarAI recognizes whether a book is fiction, non-fiction or a biography. Novels get characters, relationships, locations and a plot timeline. Non-fiction gets key takeaways, actionable insights, a glossary and recommended resources. Biographies, autobiographies and memoirs get the people, places and timeline of the life of their subject, their notable quotes, and a chat with the subject.

Which books can I upload?

SummarAI reads ePUB files without DRM (copy protection). Books protected with DRM can't be analyzed, but you may be able to get a DRM-free copy of your book.

How do I get a DRM-free copy of my book?

Whether you can download a DRM-free ePUB of a book depends on the store you bought it from, and on whether its publisher chose to sell it without DRM:

  • Kobo: books sold without DRM can be downloaded as an ePUB from My Books on the Kobo website, from the menu next to the book, with Download and Download file (see the help of Kobo). Books with DRM download as an ACSM file for Adobe Digital Editions, which keeps them protected.
  • Kindle: most Kindle books are protected with DRM and can't be downloaded as an ePUB. Only the books that their publisher sells without DRM can be downloaded as an ePUB from Manage Your Content and Devices on the Amazon website, except for books borrowed with Kindle Unlimited.
  • Google Play Books: books sold without DRM can be downloaded as an ePUB from your library on the Google Play Books website, with Export and Download EPUB. Books with DRM only export as an ACSM file, which keeps them protected.
  • Apple Books: books bought in Apple Books are protected with DRM and can't be exported.

If your store doesn't offer a DRM-free copy, many publishers and authors sell DRM-free ePUBs on their own websites. Public domain classics are available as DRM-free ePUBs from sites like Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks.

Are my books used to train AI models?

No. Your books are analyzed with the API of OpenAI, which does not use the content sent to it to train its models, and we don't train any models on them either.

Can I delete my data, and what happens to my books when I cancel?

You can delete a book from its page, or your account and all of your books from your account page. When you cancel your subscription, it stays active until the end of the billing period. Afterwards, your books stay in your library with their summaries, but your chats and notes are only available again once you subscribe or buy credits, which also let you upload new books.

What is a credit?

A credit lets you upload one book without a subscription, with the same features as the Reader plan. Credits never expire, so you can use them whenever you want. With a subscription, you can also use credits to upload more books once you have reached the quota of the month.

How accurate is the generated content?

Summaries, characters and answers are generated by AI from the text of your book. They can contain mistakes, and once in a while a spoiler can slip through. They are meant to help you read and remember, not to replace the book, and answers to your questions link to the chapters they come from, so you can check them.
